About the event
Have you ever wanted to design your own bright, silly, and slightly spooky monster mask? Now is your chance!
As part of our SummerMusik program celebrating the music of Puerto Rico, we invite you to join us for fun-filled art class where we will dive into the amazing world of the Vejigante (pronounced vay-he-GAHN-tay)!
What is a Vejigante? Vejigantes are magical, mischievous characters that are the stars of huge festivals and parades in Puerto Rico. You can always spot them in the crowd because they wear giant, brilliantly colored masks covered in spots, stripes, and LOTS of crazy horns! Even though they look like monsters with big teeth, they aren't meant to be scary—they are there to dance, play tricks, and make everyone smile. They are a rich blend of bold colors and unique designs worn during festivals especially the celebration of St. James.
